Is Your Home Secure?

I live in a pretty small town, but my husband and I are from Southern California. My sister will leave her door unlocked even when they go to the movies… I on the other hand, lock my door ALWAYS, even if we are inside. I definitely get concerned with the security of my home and children, but I don’t know much about the best practices, so today’s guest post is brought to you by Amber…

Phrases such as “home safe,” “safe at home,” or even “home sweet home” are common phrases by which people indicate the comfort level they have with their places of residency. We all like to have places that we can call our own, and it is in these places, in these homes, that we often feel the most safe and secure. However, illusions of safety and security can often stem more from feelings of comfort. For example, you might feel safe walking along a dark street at night if it is a street you walk along regularly; but does that really mean that the street is always safe? Or have you simply developed a comfort level and false sense of security with it?

Along these same lines, it is always prudent to ask yourself, is your home really as safe as it may feel to you? You probably feel a sense of sanctuary in your home, as if once you are inside, you are in a sense fortified from the dangers of the outside world. But how often do you walk into your house and forget to close the garage, or forget to lock your door? How often do you fall asleep with a window open, or leave a side door unlocked for a family member to use later at night? Your home naturally feels safe to you, but what steps are you actually taking to ensure that it is a secure and protected environment for you and anyone you may live with?

The first thing to consider with home security Pleasant Hill or your home town, is actually common sense. It may seem unnecessary to close your garage or lock your door every time you enter your house – but what’s the harm in doing it anyway? Every home comes equipped with at least basic means of security; your windows and doors and locks are your own responsibility, and they can all help to make your home more secure when utilized properly. However, for additional security that can really make your home the safe and comfortable place it always feels like, you may want to consider having additional locks installed, or even contacting a home security company such as ADT Security. Such companies can install house alarms and motion sensors that alert you of any intruders and automatically contact the authorities. They’ll even put a small sign in your yard warning any potential burglars that your home is protected by a security system.

Consider these steps to improve your home security, and the phrase “safe at home” will take on a whole new meaning.
